Vegetable Garden

Important things to remember when planning a Vegetable Garden.

When planning your vegetable garden, you may want to have a traditional look of straight edged square or rectangular beds, or you might opt for a more abstract look and have small, irregular beds placed conveniently to fit in with the surroundings.

No matter which design you choose, you need to select sites that receive sun for most of the day and are sheltered from strong winds.

Having trees, shrubs and hedges too close to your vegetable garden beds is not a good idea because their roots can compete with the vegetables for water and fertilizer. Vegetables require a good depth of soil, and If the topsoil is shallow, the beds should be built up to provide at least 20 cm of good soil. Good drainage is also essential. Soil drainage may often be improved by installing tile (clay) or PVC slotted drainage pipes. Avoid placing vegetable beds in areas where water may stand after heavy rain.
