English Garden

Information on early English Gardens.

Gardening and garden design flourished in Ancient Rome. In England , Roman examples were laid out at Fishbourne, West Sussex (c.75 AD) but gardens of this type would not reappear on English soil for over 1400 years. For centuries, gardens were primarily used for cultivating produce and natural herbal medicines.

The Renaissance rediscovery of the pleasure gardens of antiquity revived the forgotten art of garden design. Italian Renaissance gardens would dominate European design for the next three centuries.

The Renaissance impact in England was first seen in Tudor gardens. Hampton Court Palace presented a rigidly formal and rational vision of nature tamed by man. The gardens were a series of divided compartments with plants rigidly grown in geometric ‘knots.’ The decorative effect was heightened by the use of colored earth and gravel and carved heraldic beasts.

Gardens remained formal throughout the 16 th and 17 th century; the walks, canals, terraces, fountains and mounts adopted from Renaissance gardens adding variety. French and Dutch influences introduced elaborate parterres, waterworks and topiary on a grander scale.
